Thermal transfer ribbons are a type of consumables for thermal transfer printing. The thermal transfer tape consists of several layers – the base, the coloring layer and the special protective coating. The printing principle is that the stable under normal conditions colorant by the influence of the heat transfers from the print head on the paper tape. The protective coating is intended to ensure that colorant won’t come upon the printing head. There are three types of ribbons differ by colorant’s composition. These are wax, wax-resin and resin ribbons. Other parameters of thermal transfer ribbons are width, outer diameter and the diameter of the roll’s bushing. Moreover, the tapes differ in the type of roll winding - colorant inwards or outwards. The ribbon with wax base is suitable for printing on the paper, but it isn’t intended for the production of labels for goods that are subject to transportation or prolonged exposure to the environment. The wax-resin base allows printing not only on paper but on polypropylene or polyethylene. This type of marking is resistant to adverse environmental conditions, suitable for long periods of transport or storage. The resin-base ribbons allow producing labels, the most resistant to heat and abrasion.
